Most people start tarot the same way. A deck in one hand, a little white book in the other, trying to memorize seventy-eight meanings before they trust themselves to say anything at all.

I understand the impulse. I also think it is backwards.

I wanted to understand tarot, not simply memorize card meanings. When I couldn’t find the instruction I was looking for, I stopped waiting for someone else to teach me.

The book is someone else’s reading

Every printed meaning is a record of what somebody else saw in that image, once, and wrote down. It is useful. It is not the card.

When you lead with the book, you are not reading the card in front of you. You are recalling a definition and hoping it fits. That is memory work, not intuition, and the moment a spread gets complicated you will feel the difference.

Start with what you actually see

Pull one card. Do not look anything up.

Then really look at it. What colors are you drawn to first? Which way is the figure facing, and what are they looking at? What is behind them? What is missing? Is it day or night, still or moving, crowded or empty? Is anyone turned away from you?

The imagery is the whole message. Everything in these decks was put there on purpose — and what you notice first is information about the reading, not a distraction from it.

Journal three things

For every card, write down three things:

What do I see? Plain description. No interpretation yet. Just inventory what is in the picture.

How does it make me feel? Your body answers faster than your mind does. Uneasy, steady, hopeful, guarded, tired. Write the feeling even when it makes no sense against what you expected.

What does it bring up? A memory, a person, a situation you are sitting in right now. This is where the card stops being a picture and starts being a reading.

Date every entry. You are building a record, and it will surprise you later.

Start with the Major Arcana

Twenty-two cards. Take them in order, one at a time, one a day or one a week — slower is fine. These carry the biggest themes, and they are the ones you will meet most often in a reading that matters.

When you have worked through them, move into the suits. Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles. Same three questions, same journal. The suits are where the daily texture of a reading lives, and by then you will have built the habit of looking before you name.

You end up with your own book

Work the whole deck this way and you will have written something no author could hand you: seventy-eight entries in your own words, about your own life, in your own language.

Go and read the traditional meanings then. You will find plenty you agree with, and you will have the footing to notice what you don’t. That is the point.

A good teacher should help you become more confident in yourself, not more dependent on the teacher.
